A few things you need to know about Suzhou

Where is it? Click here for a map. A city in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, Suzhou is about half an hour away from Shanghai by train.

Suzhou is really ancient! The city is more than 2500 years old. An interesting feature about Suzhou is the checkerboard layout of canals and alleys which entitles it to the name 'Venice in the East'. The abundance of cultural relics and heritage sites also makes it a popular choice for tourists. Classical gardens are a must-visit!

Climate: Four seasons (summer from June to Aug, winter from Nov to Jan), humid, no extreme temperatures.

Traditional Arts & Crafts
	Kunqu Opera Kunqu Opera is said to be the mother of all Chinese operas. Its origin can be traced back to 600 years ago in the lower Yangtze Valley. Kunqu is well-known for its soft arias, colorful makeup and graceful movements of the performers. (More...)
	Taohuawu Woodcut New Year Pictures Taohuawu pictures are printed from engraved woodblock. Some of these pictures tell popular opera stories and some are pasted on front doors to ward off evils. 	Embroidery Suzhou or 'Su' emboridery has a history of over 2000 years. The artists are able to use more than 40 needlework and a 1000 different types of threads to make, flowers,birds,animals and even gardens on a piece of cloth. The Suzhou embroidery is refined and exquisite,best-known work being an embroidered cat with bright eyes and fluffy hair looking vivid and lifelike. (More...)
