Traditional Chinese Arts & Crafts Workshop Series

This series is designed for students who are interested in learning traditional Chinese arts and craftsmanship. The objective of each workshop is to develop fundamental understanding and skills through lectures, visiting trips, and hands-on practice in studio. Workshops start from July 5, 2010. Students who wish to apply please contact the international office for further instructions.

Chinese Ceramics (background reading )

Objective: To develop general knowledge about ceramic shaping and oriental decoration methods by practice teaching in the ceramic art studios.
Duration: July 5 - July 9, 2010
Total cost: 2,800RMB (tuition/accomodation/meal inclusive)
Note: Minimum 15 students to start the workshop

Schedule
Day 1 am: Ceramic art culture & appreciation
pm: Mud-stirring
Day 2 am: Moulding
pm: Coloring under glaze
Day 3` am: Engraving & drawing over the clay panal
pm: Visiting museum or Confucian Temple
Day 4 am: Shaping
pm: Shaping
Day 5 am: Burning; drinking tea
pm: Summary; opening the kilns
 

Chinese Calligraphy & Painting (background reading)

Objective: To develop basic understanding about Chinese calligraphy & painting through imitation and sketching
Duration: July 5 - July 9, 2010
Total cost: 2,800RMB (tuition/accomodation/meal inclusive)
Note: Minimum 15 students to start the workshop

Day 1 am: Chinese tea tasting, appreciating Chinese calligraphy and painting
pm: Imitation
Day 2 am & pm: Imitation
Day 3` am: Visiting museum
pm: Garden sketching
Day 4 am: Garden sketching
pm: Creation based on sketches
Day 5 am: Creation based on sketches
pm: Chinese tea tasting, works appreciation
 

Lacquer Art (background reading)

Objective: To have general knowledge about Chinese lacquer art culture by studying Chinese lacquer and making small chemical lacquer works
Duration: July 5 - July 10, 2010
Total cost: 3,280 RMB (tuition/accomodation/meal inclusive)
Note: Minimum 15 students to start the workshop

Day 1 am: Chinese lacquer art
pm: Lacquer works appreciation (visit lacquer art studio)
Day 2 am & pm: Making small chemical lacquer works
Day 3` am & pm: Making small chemical lacquer works
Day 4 am: Visit ancient villages to appreciate antique lacquer furniture
pm: Making small chemical lacquer works
Day 5 am & pm: Making small chemical lacquer works
Day 6 am & pm: Making small chemical lacquer works
 

Taohuawu Woodblock Paintings (background reading)

Objective: To have comprehensive knowledge about the carving,printing art,style and folk culture of China
Duration: July 5 - July 9, 2010
Total cost: 2,800 RMB (tuition/accomodation/meal inclusive)
Note: Minimum 15 students to start the workshop

Day 1 am: Chinese tea tasting; appreciation of Chinese New Year pictures
pm: learn how to use tools
Day 2 am & pm: study printing & mounting in groups
Day 3` am: study printing & mounting in groups
pm: visit Taohuawu New Year Pictures Museum
Day 4 am & pm: study printing & mounting in groups
Day 5 am & pm: study printing & mounting in groups
 

Embroidery & Spinning Crafts (background reading)

Objective: To develop comprehensive knowledge about traditional Chinese fiber art
Duration: July 5 - July 9, 2010
